From the Ma'an News Agency: "Israeli Investigation Doubts Death By Tear Gas" [Tue 4 Jan 2011]

Israeli investigation doubts death by tear gas

JERUSALEM (AFP) -- Israel's military sought to cast doubt Monday on reports that tear gas fired by its troops caused the death of a Palestinian protester, prompting fierce rebuttals from activists.
Jawaher Abu Rahma died overnight Friday after inhaling massive amounts of tear gas at a demonstration against Israel's separation barrier, according to Israeli and Palestinian activists and staff at a Ramallah hospital.

But a high-ranking Israeli military official told AFP that the "army doubts the authenticity of that version, because the initial inquiry has uncovered many contradictions and improbabilities, which raise questions."

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the hospital listed Abu Rahma's cause of death as "tear gas inhalation, according to the family," and questioned why the family's opinion was given on the death certificate.

The official also contended that tear gas disperses rapidly in the air over open ground and does not kill protesters, questioning whether Abu Rahma was even at the December 31 demonstration in the West Bank village of Bil'in.

"Rahma does not appear in any photos taken during the protest in question and it's possible she didn't participate in it," he said.

Activists and Abu Rahma's relatives slammed the Israeli military for seeking to cast doubt on the death through anonymously given quotes, asking why military officials were not willing to address the issue on the record.

"Their claims are based on absolutely no fact. They bring absolutely no evidence to any of these claims," said Jonathan Pollak, an Israeli activist who told AFP he attended the demonstration with Abu Rahma and saw her there.

"We, on the other hand, have the testimony of the doctors at the hospital. There were numerous witnesses who have seen her at the demonstration," he said.

"We will soon have a report from the Red Crescent saying that she was evacuated from the demonstration due to tear gas inhalation."

He ridiculed Israeli military claims that Abu Rahma was suffering a terminal illness, saying her employer could testify she worked the day before the protest, "which is not something someone with a terminal illness would do."

Hospital director Mohamed Eideh told AFP that Abu Rahma arrived at the hospital with her parents, suffering lung failure.

"Her parents, who accompanied her in the ambulance, said she had inhaled a large amount of tear gas and said she had no pre-existing serious medical condition," he said.

"The lung failure and the liquid that was coming out of her mouth when she arrived at the hospital were signs or symptoms that she was exposed to tear gas."

On Friday, the army said it had used unspecified "means of dispersing demonstrations" against some 250 violent protesters taking part in a weekly rally against the Israeli separation barrier near the West Bank village of Bil'in.

Photos showed clouds of tear gas billowing around stone-throwing protesters.

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad also attended the protest but was unhurt.

This made me cry.

I just saw this pic on the Facebook page, "Israel? No it's Palestine."  It made me cry.

On 31 May 2010, the ship Mavi Mamara, one of six in a a flotilla of ships sponsored by the Turkish NGO, Foundation for Human Rights and Freedoms and Humanitarian Relief (IHH), which was bringing humanitarian aid to the besieged people of Gaza, was boarded by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in international waters.  The IDF commandos killed 9 humanitarian workers and injured 30 others.  The flotilla was diverted to the Israeli port of Ashdod for inspection.  Any items not approved by Israel will not be transfered to the people of Gaza.

The need to try to break the illegal sea and land blockade around Gaza is great because Israel strictly limits the amount of material into the Gaza strip.  After 2008-09's Operation Cast Lead, in which Israel killed nearly 1400 Gazans (including 300+ children) and further devastated the infrastructure, destroying 11,000+ homes, 200 factories, 15 of 27 hospitals, 280 schools,
Israel still does not let in enough food or medical supplies to sustain the 1.5 million Palestinians of Gaza it holds captive in what has become the world's largest open-air prison.  Israel will not let in ANY building materials such as cement, rebar, wood, glass.  Meanwhile, Gazans sit in rubble--hungry, homeless and jobless.

White phosphorus: Israeli and American War Crimes

Below is an article on the effects of White Phosphorus on human victims.  White phosphorus has been used on civilian populations by both the US and Israel.  The people of Fallujah, Iraq are experiencing major health problems including an alarming increase in cancer cases and their children are being born with horrific deformities and defects due in part to white phosphorus and other chemicals America used on the city during the Gulf War.  It is now said that the population there is suffering as much as the population of Hiroshima, Japan after the atomic bomb was dropped.

This article features the story of a man from Gaza, Palestine.  During a 23 day period in 2008-09, Israel attacked the Gaza Strip (Operation Cast Lead) in response to sporadic [homemade] rocket attacks from within its borders.  Over 9 years, approximately 30 Israelis were killed by such rockets; In 23 days, Israel killed about 1,400 Palestinians, over 300 of whom were children. In the attack, Israel used white phosphorus, it says, to light the battlefield.  The evidence suggests differently.  As for a "battlefield," the Gaza Strip is one of the most densely populated places on Earth with more than 1.5 million people packed into 139 square miles.  The "battlefield" is actually an urban area.  With closed borders and a sea blockade, civilians had no where to run.  The picture in the article below is of an occupied school with white phosphorus raining down upon it.  It was one of 280 schools destroyed by the Israeli terrorist state.  In addition, Israel destroyed 11,000+ homes, 200 factories, 15 of 27 hospitals, well the list goes on.  All war crimes.

The use of white phosphorus on civilian populations is a WAR CRIME!

White phosphorus burns

E-mailPrint
White phosphorus burns(The Lancet) In January, 2009, an 18-year-old man presented to the emergency department after suffering an attack with an incendiary shell. He had many painful patches of full-thickness burns, which were surrounded by sloughed tissue. His wounds covered 30% of his body surface area, and were distributed on both upper and lower limbs, and his right shoulder.
There were no signs of inhalation burns. After a clinical diagnosis of white phosphorus burns was made, the airway was secured, resuscitation fluid was initiated, and wounds were irrigated with diluted sodium bicarbonate solution before wet dressing.
1day after admission to the burns unit, white smoke was noticed emanating from the wounds, which now contained extensive necrotic tissue and had extended into the underlying tissue.

He was urgently transferred to the operating room for debridement and excision of necrotic tissue, and removal of white phosphorus particles. During debridement, a white phosphorus particle was accidentally dislodged resulting in a superficial burn on a nurse's neck.

We transferred our patient to the intensive care unit for monitoring of vital signs, electrolyte disturbance (in particular hypocalcaemia), and electrocardiogram (ECG) changes.
After 8 days in hospital, our patient was relatively well, and was discharged without any systemic complications.
At 16-month follow-up, our patient was well; however, hypertrophic, mildly tender scars remained on his chest, arm, and thigh.
White phosphorus is a smoke-producing, waxy, yellow transparent combustible solid,1 which is used mainly in military and industrial settings. In the presence of oxygen, it spontaneously ignites with a yellow flame and produces dense smoke; it extinguishes only when deprived of oxygen or totally consumed.2
On contact with exposed skin, white phosphorus produces painful chemical burns;3 these typically appear as yellowish, necrotic, full-thickness lesions due to both chemical and thermal components. Because white phosphorus has high lipid solubility, the injuries often extend deep into underlying tissues with resultant delayed wound healing.
White phosphorus can also be absorbed systemically resulting in multiple organ dysfunction syndrome because of its effect on erythrocytes, kidneys, liver, and heart.2,4
First aid management of white phosphorus burns includes removal of the patient's clothes and application of saline or a water-soaked dressing.
1 On the basis of animal studies and case reports, in the emergency department, continuous irrigation with water is recommended to minimise the complications of the burn,124 and large easily identifiable particles of white phosphorus should be debrided. Wood lamp (ultraviolet light) or a solution of 0·5% copper sulphate can be used to facilitate the extinction of embedded particles.4
In critically ill patients, excision of the necrotic tissue and skin grafting, plus appropriate fluid replacement, and close monitoring of electrolytes and ECG are required to avoid predictable complications like hypocalcaemia, hyperphosphataemia, and cardiac arrhythmia. White phosphorus burns are associated with significant morbidity often necessitating lengthy hospital stays. Extreme cases can be fatal. We cannot give an estimate of the number of such cases in our burns unit because it is in a war situation in which no formal recording was done; these burns are rarely encountered in practice and literature describing cases is limited.
According to the UN Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons it is prohibited to make civilians the object of attack by incendiary weapons.

Israel makes 300 Arabs HOMELESS.

This is ROUTINE behavior for Israel. It happens ALL THE TIME to Palestinians in the West Bank and here, to Bedouins. This is ETHNIC CLEANSING and YOU (americans) are funding it through the massive amount of foreign aid the USA gives to Israel.

Here the claim is that these Bedouins, who have been in this, their homeland, for CENTURIES did not have proper building permits and thus must have their housing destroyed. Hmmm...and Israel was founded when? 1948? Hmmm....

Israel renders 300 Bedouins homeless

Tue, 27 Jul 2010 15:58:28 GMT

Israeli forces demolished several houses and evicted some 300 Bedouins from their village in the Negev desert.

Hundreds of Israeli forces have attacked Bedouins living in the Negev desert, demolishing their village and leaving about 300 villagers homeless.

According to rights activists, more than 1,500 Israeli police forces arrived at the al-Araqib village shortly before dawn on Tuesday to bulldoze the entire area.

Israeli forces razed all houses and uprooted hundreds of olive trees belonging to the villagers, the activists who tried to prevent the demolishing told AFP.

Violence also broke out as Israeli police forces attacked the villagers and the activists who tried to stop the police from destroying the houses.

Several people were wounded and some others were arrested, activists said.

Israeli officials claimed that the homes had been built without legal permits.

Bedouins are predominantly desert-dwelling Arabs who have been living in the Negev desert for hundreds of years.

1000s of Israeli police said to be evacuating/erasing historical Bedouin village

by PHILIP WEISS on JULY 26, 2010 · ike

"Thousands of police are in the Negev desert village of el-Araqib right now (5:30 a.m. in Israel), beginning a mass evacuation, demolition, and erasure of this historical Bedouin village," writes Yeela Raanan of the Regional Council for the Unrecognized Villages (RCUV).
"If you have access to the media, please send them to this village as soon as possible! The village of el-Araqib is between Rahat and Beer Sheva, and in a location that the Goldberg commission deemed outside of the areas allowed for the Negev Arabs... an area designated only for Jews...
"The JNF (Jewish National Fund) is planting a forest on this village lands - to make sure that the Bedouin cannot live on their village lands or use them for agriculture. The villagers turned to the Israeli courts, as the JNF were planting this forest at the behest of the Israeli government, but against Israeli law...
"The people of el-Araqib won the court battle... but this morning it seems that the Government of Israel has started a war -- of the Government against its own citizens."

2 injured in Bil'in, journalist injured in Al-Ma'sara protests

Published Friday 16/07/2010 (updated) 17/07/2010 11:05

Ramallah – Ma'an – Two residents of the West Bank village of Bil'in and an international journalist in Al'-Ma'sara village were injured on Friday, during weekly protests against Israel's separation wall.

In Bil'in, where the wall cuts off agricultural lands from farmers despite a High Court ruling mandating its removal, Israeli forces stationed on the western side of the wall responded to attempts by the villagers to access the lands using tear-gas canisters shot from high-velocity launchers and rubber-coated bullets.

A delegation from the French town of Saint Anne suffered from tear-gas inhalation as they participated alongside Bil'in residents. Also protesting were senior leaders from the Palestinian Popular Struggle Front.

Those injured were identified as Majd Burnat, 12, hit in the foot with a high-velocity tear-gas canister, and Mohammad Hamad, 18, also hit with a canister.

Meanwhile in Al-Ma'sara village, south of Bethlehem, 60 Palestinian and international activists marched toward the village entrance demanding an end to construction of the wall.

Israeli forces responded by firing tear gas canisters and sound bombs.

At the protest, leaders of Al-Ma'sara’s popular committee against the wall spoke about their ongoing non-violent resistance, and commemorated the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille, calling for an end to the arbitrary imprisonment of Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails, committee member Mahmoud Zawahreh said.

Zawahreh added that an international journalist was injured, and committee leader Marwan Fararja was detained and threatened by Israeli soldiers, but later released without charge.

The committee said the frequent night raids in Al-Ma’sara, arrests and threats would only strengthen the nonviolent movement.

The Charade of Relaxing the Gaza Blockade (Uruknet - ITA)

The following article is reposted from Uruknet, an excellent source on news from the Middle East. See original article here.

The Charade of Relaxing the Gaza Blockade
Prabir Purkayastha

July 11, 2010

The Israeli regime has now agreed to lift partially the blockade of Gaza: potato chips, mattresses, washing machines, honey – all of which were banned earlier can now enter Gaza. Predictably, the US and EU Governments have welcomed this Israeli step, without questioning the military significance of the earlier banning potato chips. Nor have these leaders of the "civilized world", continuously teaching the virtues of human rights and democracy to their more "backward brethren" in the global south, questioned what is the military significance of banning Gaza exports and preventing exit of students to study in the West Bank? How do Gaza’s exports affect Israel’s security? How do preventing Gaza students from studying in the West Bank increase its security?

The story of Gaza’s blockade has never been about Israel’s security. The tunnels that exist on the Egyptian side can supply any of the items that Israel could consider a security risk. The issue has always been of punishing the people of Gaza for voting in the Hamas. The war against Gaza, punitive bombing, cutting off food and daily necessities, all of this is collective punishment – clear and simple. That it is illegal under international law counts for little. As long as the US backs Israel and the European Union play along, Israel can act with impunity. In any case, its military clout in the region is unrivalled and therefore it faces a threat to its security only in its imagination. With the altered balance of forces at the global level, Israel feels that its long-term project of squeezing the Palestinians out of their homeland has no impediment on the ground. This is the Project Greater Israel, which will create one state of Israel including the West Bank, disenfranchising the Palestinians and pushing them into small Bantustans. In this scheme, Gaza is to be beaten into submission, with its economy completely destroyed and surviving only on the mercy of the master race dominating this Greater Israel.

Not surprisingly, periodically Israeli military and other commentators speak approvingly of learning from the Nazis. The latest is retired Israeli Judge Hadassa Ben-Itto saying recently, "We must learn from the Nazi tactics," during a conference discussing ways to improve the State of Israel's PR efforts in the world (see Omar Barghouti’s accompanying article)

The list of the goods that can now enter Gaza has been purged of its obvious punitive nature. What threat did potato chips or mattresses ever pose to Israel? How could dry fruits be considered? These do not now find place in the banned list. But the bigger lie in Israel’s current campaign on "relaxing" embargo is what Israel will not allow. It will not allow any exports out of Gaza making sure no industry can survive in Gaza. For any meaningful economic activity, a number of items are required to be imported. All of these are listed as "dual use" – any steel items, lathe machines, machine parts, chemicals, etc. -- the list is vague and can cover any item required for a manufacturing base. This is the trick that Israel is now using – allowing finished goods that were banned earlier and obviously not related to Israel’s security.

Apart from banning the so-called dual use items, Israel has also banned all building materials. These can be imported into Gaza only if they are for international agencies’ own construction or if permitted by Palestinian Authority. As Palestinian Authority – the one which was not elected but claims to be the official one curtsy western powers and Israel (President Mahmud Abbas’s term as President is also now over and in any case Hamas one the Parliamentary elections and Salim Fayyad is Prime Minsiter under a "constitutional" coup) does not exist in Gaza, it means that no one barring international agencies can import any building materials. None of the 8,000 houses destroyed in the one-sided war that launched on the Gaza Strip can be repaired as no steel or cement can be imported. If allowed, the devious Gazans would immediately convert the steel into giant slingshots and the cement to balls of concrete, firing them from these slingshots. No wonder Israel’s security is always in danger! In any case, the world has seen how dangerous slingshots can be in the fake videos that IDF put out after the Mavi Marmara attack.

The other sad part of Israel’s blockade of Gaza is that it will not allow any student from Gaza to leave to study anywhere including West Bank. In a Supreme Court hearing, on behalf of a student in Gaza wanting to continue her studies in the West Bank, the Israeli Defense Ministry announced that even under its "new" Gaza policy, there would be no relaxation of the policy preventing travel of persons into and out of Gaza in all but exceptional humanitarian cases.

Since 2000, Israel has imposed a sweeping ban on the exit of Palestinian students from the Gaza Strip. A Supreme Court ruling in 2007 asked the Israeli State to consider allowing access for students from Gaza wishing to study in the West Bank. However, Israel has not granted a single student from Gaza permission to travel to the West Bank. Loud and clear – this was collective punishment and continues to be so.

Recently, Israel has also passed laws by which it can send back to Gaza any one originally from there but currently living in the West Bank. The Palestinians from the West Bank and from Gaza cannot marry and live together as husband and wife. The same rule applies to Israel’s Palestinian-Arab citizens and West Bank Palestinians. They also cannot marry and live together – neither in West Bank nor in Israel. And the Israeli judiciary has accepted this as not violating any human rights; something that even the South African Judiciary did not do, otherwise of the Apartheid regime.

Step by step, Israel is being exposed as what it is. A state in which citizens and the state wear the clothes of victimhood to cover their deeply racist society; a state that believes only in the law of the gun; a state where imposing hunger on the Gaza population is to be seen as "putting Palestinians on a diet." The problem with this paranoid view of the world is that it cannot last forever. It may last as long as it can coerce the west on its past record of anti-Semitism. As the west fades in power, Israel will be perceived even more clearly as a rogue state. The problem is that while its racist edifice gets exposed and crumbles, the Palestinians will still have to pay a very heavy price. As will the rest of the world with rising Islamophobia in the west aiding and abetting Talbinised Islamic fundamentalism.

ISRAELI jailers STARVE Palestinian PRISONER to press him to work as INFORMER.

Israel Never Stops Their Low Down Dirty Tactics

May 5, 2010

NABLUS, (PIC)-- The Palestinian prisoner society said that Israeli interrogators in the Ashkelon prison starved a 19-year-old prisoner and told him he would remain without food until he cooperates with them and work as an informer.

The society said that the interrogators took advantage of the prisoner’s illiteracy and forced him to place thumbprints on papers he did not know anything about or what they included.

The society promised it will follow up the issue of this prisoner and file a complaint against the jailers who used starvation as a torture means to pressure him.

In another incident, Israel’s channel seven said Tuesday that the Israeli intelligence apparatus intensified its attempts, following the animated video recently released by the armed wing of Hamas, to obtain information about the whereabouts of soldier Gilad Shalit.

The channel added that the Shabak embarked lately on calling ordinary Palestinian citizens in the Gaza Strip to urge them to report any information about Shalit in exchange for $10,000,000.

Security sources in Gaza had told the Palestinian information center (PIC) that the security apparatuses discovered some limited incidents in which some individuals responded to these calls.

More Low-down Dirty Tactics:

This is an excellent article on how Israel recruits Palestinian informants and the effect on Palestinian society, read HERE. Denial of medical treatment and arrest & torture are just two of the ways detailed in this article of how Israel turns civilian Palestinians into collaborators.

Last year the Israeli Defense Forces said they would declare war on anti-Israeli sentiment online. Here is an article about how Shin Bet, Israeli's Internal Security Service, goes about using social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to trick Palestinians into becoming informants: click here.

Thoughts of the Day v. 2

What if you were born without a country; lived your entire life in oppression, watching half your loved ones murdered and you died--still without a country? What if the whole of the world watched it happen--and did nothing? What if YOU were Palestinian?
